Periscope, the live social media video platform, just pushed out a new update that allows you to sketch on the screen while live broadcasting.

I tried it out and the functionally is fairly easy to use. Once live, tap the screen and you get this screen that allows you to start sketching, hide the chat or flip the camera. You can also flip the camera by double tapping the screen while live.

Once you click “sketch” you get these options at the bottom of your screen and you can start sketching by using your finger on the phone’s display. You can even change the color of your sketch.

Sketches disappear after a few seconds, but remember people viewing can take screen grabs.

I can’t say that I’ve felt the need to sketch before while doing a Periscope  – though I’ve admittedly slowed down broadcasting on Periscope. Being able to sketch on the screen might come in handy if we are explaining something that needs a visual, I suppose.

It’ll be interesting to see how people use this new function in a meaningful way.
