Anyone can tell authentic stories. Seriously. I mean it. Anyone! As long as we make up our minds that we want to it’s possible.

I truly believe that. I’ve seen it, too. People with no formal background in storytelling, started becoming great and public storytellers. That’s usually the key here with storytelling: It is very public. Sometimes, some people – maybe even trolls – try to argue our story, so that doesn’t make the whole being public thing easier.

Many of us have lost the art of storytelling since childhood, however. We don’t share stories. We share statements. Or we share an opinion. Or a marketing message: Please buy from me. Me! Me! Me! Click here. (Did you click?)

Stories build relationships beyond transactions.

Or we tell and not show.

We make statements saying that something is great instead of giving specific examples of why something is great.

Yet anyone can share stories. Anyone. But it takes time and practice. Sometimes, people ask me to give them the “secret’ formula on how to tell stories. Ready? Here it is:

Recognize great story
Determine who might want to hear this story
Determine what details to stare
Tell them the story

Done. It’s really that simple. In theory, football is, too: Run a play the opponent can’t defend and you score – and ultimately win.  Of course, playing football (and especially winning in football) takes a lot of practice and then just a few people make it to the top levels.

It takes practice and that’s ongoing. The same is true to storytelling.

The concept might be relatively simple, but the practice and refinement is ongoing – like about anything in life.
