IMG_4819As many of you know, after much debate I did finally publish a book in 2015 on authentic storytelling. I’ve sold more than I’ve ever thought I would (over 200) and enjoy when people share pictures on Twitter or Instagram of them reading it on planes, beaches, etc.

I usually have a Tweet related to my book pinned to the top of my Twitter feed and my auto direct message also lets new followers know about the book. So far, the reception has been mostly good.

Here’s one common response I get:

And then one day, I received this Twitter message:

If a sponsor gave you a check to donate 5K copies of your book, who would you want to receive those gifts?

My answer:

Organizations and people who are trying to make a bigger impact on their communities.

It didn’t even take me long to think about that. Now, that person sends similar messages to just about everyone that follows her, according to a quick check of the Twitter profile. That’s OK and I wouldn’t even call it spammy at all. I thought the question was great, relevant and got me thinking.

The answer to that question really comes back to who my audience is. And then within that group, I assume it should be a subset that can’t pay for it? That’s of course hard to determine. Being able to pay and actually wanting to pay are two different things, too. I’m able to subscribe to a daily printed newspaper or maybe even two or three, but I just don’t want to. I get my news via email and on Twitter – sometimes from those same outlets that print newspapers.

Either way, the question reminded me why I wrote a book in the first place and the journey it put me on.

  • It was a tremendous learning experience to actually get it to market and sold.
  • It’s another way to keep making an impact on people living and sharing better stories.
