How to run a promotion (sponsored post) in your Instagram Stories

I see more and more promoted sponsored posts on Instagram Stories. So of course, I wanted to find out how to do that and am running my first campaign.

First things first, you have to switch your Instagram account to a business account if it’s not set up that. Here’s how to do that.

Once that’s done, you just post an image to Instagram proper.

From there, click on PROMOTE and get your promotion set up:

  • Pick your audience
  • Budget
  • Timeline
  • Pick a button
  • Etc.

Then click on CREATE PROMOTION and you can see previews for how it looks in the regular feed and on stories.


The Stories version then looks like this:

I haven’t seen the numbers yet on whether or not I like to run this type of campaign and if it’s worth my funds, but at the very least I now know how to run sponsored posts that then links back to my profile.

I was pretty sure I had set it to send people to the conference landing page and not my profile, but somewhere along the lines that changed.  So I went back, deleted the promotion and changed it. Something to be aware of.
