The new YouTube Directors App for Businesses can help you tell better stories  through video. It’s quite easy to use. YouTube didn’t pay me to say that but I just downloaded the app and gave it a try. I shot this video completely on my iPhone and finished the “edit” in minutes. I say that in quotation marks because the editing was pretty minimal since the app walks you through the production process.

When I opened the app, it gave me a number of options to create short video stories.

I immediately loved how it stresses the importance of multiple shots for each video. Each shot lasts for 4-6 seconds, which helps our videos move along. The time is shown when you record so the app trains us to stay on point, too.

Pick a template and it explains how to focus the video. Now, when I shot my video, I went a bit off the suggestions, but still considered them. They got me thinking. So, you have room to make it your own project.

Before you start shooting, I would recommend thinking a bit about the story you want to share. I thought through mine and included different camera moves and even outfit changes.

Once you start a project it walks you through each shot and you can add text on the screen as necessary.

Once you start shooting, it even tells you how to position yourself.

Overall, the app was easy to use and it’s another tool to help people share their stories. I’m tempted to say that it’s for small business owners but really anyone can use it for the right projects.

I’d recommend the app and would encourage you to give it a try in your storytelling adventures. Send me a link to your video here if you want.

The one downside is that it doesn’t save the video to the phone while uploading it, but maybe even better is that it’s saving your videos to your Google Drive. (Updated 6/20/2016 to add this detail.)
